LA Waterkeeper’s Yearly Beach Cleanup Raises Awareness of the Problem of Plastics
As part of LA Waterkeeper’s Plastic Free July Cleanup Challenge, volunteers are preparing to gather at various beaches and rivers in Los Angeles County, including Santa Monica Beach.
This annual community beach cleanup contributes to a global movement that aims to combat plastic waste, resulting in the reduction of local waterway pollution. Last year alone, over 4,000 pounds of trash were reportedly collected during the cleanup efforts.
Officials emphasized that LA Waterkeeper’s yearly beach and river cleanups play a crucial role in raising awareness about the growing problem of plastics. By motivating individuals to reduce their plastic consumption throughout the year, these events encourage community members to advocate for society-wide actions to address the issue.
The cleanup events are scheduled to take place at Santa Monica Beach, Junipero Beach in Long Beach, Compton Creek, and the LA River. In Santa Monica, volunteers will assemble at Santa Monica Beach Tower 20 at 9 a.m. on July 8.
