Officers will enforce an eight-hour crackdown on impaired driving.
The Santa Monica Police Department has announced that SMPD officers will man a driving under the influence (DUI) checkpoint from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Friday, June 10, 2026. The location of the checkpoint will not be disclosed to the public.
DUI checkpoints are conducted to improve safety on the roads. They are placed at specific intersections or roadways after impaired driving data has been collected and analyzed to find the best placements for checkpoints.
Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death in the United States, with crashes that involve driving under the influence being a common cause of road accidents that cause fatalities and serious injuries.
Driving under the influence of alcohol is prohibited, but it is not the only cause of driver impairment. Marijuana and some prescription and over-the-counter drugs can also cloud a driver’s clarity. While both medical and recreational marijuana use are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.
SMPD reminds drivers that even a first-time DUI offense carries strict consequences, including $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
