Penalties for DUI Offenses Can Exceed $13,000, Include Loss of License
The Santa Monica Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint on Friday, September 20, 2024, at an undisclosed location between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m., according to a department release.
Checkpoint locations are chosen based on data showing areas with higher rates of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary goal of these checkpoints is to enhance public safety by removing impaired drivers from the roads.
The department emphasized that impaired driving poses a significant risk to all road users, and any steps to reduce the number of impaired drivers can greatly improve traffic safety.
SMPD also reminded the public that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Certain prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and marijuana can also impair a driver’s ability. While recreational and medicinal marijuana are legal in California, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.
First-time DUI offenders face an average of $13,500 in fines, penalties, and a suspended license.
Funding for the DUI checkpoint is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
