Malibu Schools to Reopen January 21 After Franklin Fire and Palisades Fire Recovery

Schools Set To Resume Classes Tuesday, Resources Available for Displaced Families.

Malibu schools will reopen Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025, following a thorough cleaning and recovery efforts after the devastating Palisades Fire. The schools set to welcome back students are Webster Elementary, Malibu Elementary, Malibu Middle, and Malibu High, according to a message from the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Superintendent.

“This is a big accomplishment following the devastation experienced throughout Malibu and Pacific Palisades over the past two weeks,” said the superintendent. “We are looking forward to welcoming all Malibu students back on Tuesday.”

The Boys & Girls Club Malibu has established a Disaster Relief Center to assist individuals and families affected by the wildfire. Available resources include financial assistance, essential supplies, and mental health services. Donations of toiletries and other pre-approved items are needed. Visit bgcmalibu.org for details on donations, volunteer opportunities, and accessing resources.

The district is also asking families who lost homes or are displaced to complete a survey to better understand and support their needs. You can fill out the survey at the provided link.

Addressing concerns about air quality, the district has outlined measures to ensure student safety:

  • Monitoring EPA and South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) data
  • Utilizing Purple Air sensors and California Department of Education guidelines
  • Installing MERV-13 air filters in classrooms
  • Advising staff to keep windows and doors closed to maintain indoor air quality
  • Adjusting outdoor activities based on air quality index levels

SMMUSD has created Air Quality Monitoring and Response memo detailing the standard used by the District in determining air quality that includes the following measures:

The Santa Monica College Foundation is hosting disaster support distribution events on January  22-24 and January 26 at the Corsair Gym (1900 Pico Blvd.), offering food, clothing, and hygiene products to those in need.

The City of Malibu will hold a town hall meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 6 p.m. at Malibu High School. The meeting will include updates on recovery efforts and provide residents with an opportunity to ask questions. Visit malibucity.org for more information.

The district’s comprehensive resource guide for fire recovery is available online and updated daily at bit.ly/Resources-Fires2025.
