Malibu and Pacific Palisades Request Emergency Financial Measures
By Ramis Sadrieh, Chairperson, Malibu Pacific Palisades Chamber of Commerce
On behalf of the business communities of Malibu and the Pacific Palisades, the Malibu Pacific Palisades Chamber of Commerce is declaring a local economic state of emergency in direct response to the devastating impact of the Palisades Fire.
While most businesses in Malibu were fortunate enough to physically survive the flames, the aftermath of the destruction caused by the fire has resulted in crippling economic suffocation. The loss of foot traffic, suspension of commuter flow, road closures, evacuations, and lingering public safety concerns have created a vacuum where Malibu commerce once thrived. Both Pacific Palisades’ and Malibu’s businesses, still standing, are starved of customers, visibility, and operational stability and are experiencing what can only be described as a lack of economic oxygen.
This is not just a pause in revenue — it is an existential threat. Local family-run establishments, restaurants, retailers, service providers, and professional offices are now at risk of permanent closure. Businesses that have served our communities for decades are facing overwhelming uncertainty and spiraling losses with each passing day. This would cause a furtherance of economic damage to our already suffering business landscape.
Therefore, we urge:
- Immediate recognition by municipal, county, and state officials of the unique economic emergency unfolding in the commercial corridors of Malibu and the Pacific Palisades.
- Expedited access to recovery grants, bridge loans, and emergency relief funds for small and medium-sized businesses.
- Deployment of economic stimulus initiatives, including public-private partnerships, local shopping campaigns, and coordinated efforts to reopen access roads and commuter routes safely and swiftly.
- Suspension or deferral of commercial rent obligations, taxes, and utility fees to give breathing room to business owners working to recover.
- Emergency support for displaced employees, including unemployment assistance, job placement programs, and mental health resources.
- A concerted effort of individual financial support through donations and/or grant partnerships with 0% loans, the purchase of gift cards, certificates, and the use of catering services.
The business community stands ready to collaborate with all agencies and leaders to restore the economic vitality of our beloved towns. We humbly ask for your immediate support and attention to this urgent call.
