Santa Monica Shooting Triggers Lockdown in Downtown and Manhunt

Authorities Lift Shelter-In-Place Order after SMPD Officer was Injured and Hospitalized

The Santa Monica Police Department began the search for a suspect this afternoon following a shooting incident that injured an SMPD officer that occurred near the Santa Monica Place Mall on Wednesday. The incident prompted a shelter-in-place order and temporary lockdown of the downtown shopping district, though officials have since cleared the area.

The Santa Monica Police Department said a male suspect, described as Black, in his 30s, wearing a dark jacket and black pants, fled the scene shortly after shots were fired near 4th Street and Colorado Avenue. Officers continue to conduct a coordinated search effort in the surrounding area.

Police confirmed that one officer was injured during the response and is currently in stable condition at a nearby hospital.
