SMPD Launch New Recruitment Website Amid High Vacancy Rates

The site features multimedia content, including day-in-the-life videos and officer profiles, highlighting the impact of serving the community

The Santa Monica Police Department unveiled a new recruitment website, www.JoinSMPD.com, in June aiming to attract a new generation of police officers and civilian professionals, authorities said Tuesday.

The user-friendly platform, launched to address historically high vacancy rates and growing competition for qualified candidates, integrates the city’s online application portal with details on the National Testing Network written exam, physical fitness qualifier, oral review, background investigation, and post-offer testing. The site features multimedia content, including day-in-the-life videos and officer profiles, highlighting the impact of serving the community.

“We must meet today’s talent where they are—online, informed, and engagement-driven,” Police Chief Ramon Batista said during a June 10 City Council meeting.

The website includes clear timelines and tips for each recruitment phase, from application to academy training and onboarding, with dedicated sections for both sworn and civilian roles to promote a diversified workforce. Batista added, “We’re not just filling vacancies. We’re investing in a future where our department reflects the strength, resilience, and excellence of our city.”

SMPD, located at 333 Olympic Drive, offers a compensation package, wellness support, training and professional development. Interested candidates are encouraged to visit the site to explore opportunities.
