SMC students will lead efforts to clean the adopted beach section, providing gloves, buckets, and safety training
Santa Monica College is rallying the community for Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday, September 20 from 9 a.m. to noon at Santa Monica Beach Tower 20, known as the “Inkwell,” a historic site where African Americans, including SMC student Nick Gabaldón, challenged Jim Crow racism to open public beaches to all.
The event, part of the world’s largest volunteer marine cleanup, underscores the location’s significance in promoting inclusivity.
SMC students will lead efforts to clean the adopted beach section, providing gloves, buckets, and safety training. Volunteers are urged to bring sunscreen, hats, and reusable water bottles, and are encouraged to bike, walk, or take public transit. For those driving, parking passes can be requested at the lot entrance between Bay St. and Bicknell St. The cleanup honors the Inkwell’s legacy while addressing marine debris.
