Bass announced additional measures, including increased foot patrols and bike officers, mental health teams, expedited permits and graffiti removal
Mayor Karen Bass signed the final approval Thursday for a major modernization and expansion of the Los Angeles Convention Center, a key step in her plan to revitalize Downtown Los Angeles, which has faced slow foot traffic and office vacancies since the pandemic.
The project, described by Bass as “transformational,” aims to boost tourism, support local businesses, and create union jobs during and after construction, which is set to begin in October.
“This project is more than just a building,” Bass said in a statement. “It is about revitalizing the heart of our city and bringing good-paying jobs and tourism straight to Downtown.” She thanked the City Council for their partnership in advancing the initiative.
To support Downtown’s immediate revitalization, Bass announced additional measures, including increased Los Angeles Police Department foot patrols and bike officers to enhance safety, mental health teams deployed in areas like the Historic Core, expedited permits for Downtown developments, and a coordinated effort to remove graffiti and improve street cleanliness.
