Art Workshop Focuses on Healing After Wildfires

Organizers described the gathering as a space for reflection and renewal after a year marked by natural disasters, immigration enforcement actions and social division

A Window Between Worlds, a national nonprofit that uses art for trauma healing, will hold a free virtual event titled “Wellness Day: Art in Times of Crisis” on Tuesday, Dec. 2, from 1 to 3 p.m. PST via Zoom.

The two-hour program will feature personal stories of resilience from founder Cathy Salser and youth facilitator Sonia Hsieh Schumacher, drawn from recent in-person “Recovery Pod” workshops supporting wildfire-affected communities.

Participants will take part in a guided art experience called “Beyond the Break: A Kintsugi Journey,” led by Kiyomi Knox, exploring themes of repair and strength through the Japanese practice of repairing broken ceramics with gold.

Organizers described the gathering as a space for reflection and renewal after a year marked by natural disasters, immigration enforcement actions and social division.

A separate 30-minute session from 3 to 3:30 p.m. will showcase the organization’s facilitator training programs, with scholarships available for individuals and groups serving fire-impacted areas.

Registration is free and open to the public. The nonprofit, which reports serving more than 142,000 participants in 2024, uses art-based workshops to support survivors of trauma, including domestic violence and disaster recovery.
