County Directs $201,500 to Food Aid as Families Recover From SNAP Delay

Third District support this week included events at Valley Community Healthcare in North Hollywood and Open Arms Food Pantry in the Fairfax area

Los Angeles County Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath has directed more than $200,000 this month toward food assistance programs in her district as community groups report unusually high demand following a federal delay in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.

Horvath said the $201,500 in Third District funding is intended to help residents who spent weeks rationing groceries or skipping meals before SNAP benefits were authorized last week. “No one in Los Angeles County should have to navigate hunger because federal help came too late,” Horvath said in a statement. “This significant investment in food security is one step — and we will continue strengthening this support so every person has the dignity of reliable care.”

County officials say the new funding supports several community-based organizations hosting food distributions ahead of Thanksgiving and is part of a broader effort to reinforce the region’s food safety net. Demand for free groceries has surged in recent weeks, according to local food pantries.

Third District support this week included events at Valley Community Healthcare in North Hollywood and Open Arms Food Pantry in the Fairfax area on Nov. 25, as well as Thursday’s Westside Thanksgiving Community Dinner at the West L.A. Civic Center.

The district has also partnered with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and the County Chief Executive Office to back two large-scale holiday distributions held Nov. 20 at The Church On The Way and on Nov. 26 at the San Fernando Swap Meet.

County leaders said they expect continued need through the holiday season and are exploring additional measures to stabilize access to nutritious food.
