Santa Monica Storm Watch: Heavy Rain to Hit L.A. County; Santa Monica Sandbags, Main Road Closure, Event Delays

Ahead of Storm: Santa Monica Issues Flood Tips and New Event Date

The National Weather Service warns heavy rain could trigger flooding in coastal and low-lying areas from late Friday night through Saturday evening across Los Angeles County, including Santa Monica.

City officials say impacts aren’t expected to be major but will be monitored. Residents can pick up free empty sandbags at all Santa Monica Fire Stations; sand is available at Clover Park (2600 Ocean Park Blvd.). Bring your own shovel. Prep tips: turn off sprinklers, slow down on wet roads, use headlights, and watch for pedestrians.

CalTrans has announced that State Route 27 between Pacific Coast Highway and Grand View Drive will be closed to the public at 10:00 p.m. Thursday, as Caltrans prepares for an incoming series of rainstorms expected to last through the weekend.

Officials said crews will monitor weather and road conditions throughout the storm and will reopen the section once it is deemed safe. Caltrans plans to provide daily updates on the closure and reopening timeline.

Drivers are advised to use alternate routes and exercise caution when traveling in wet weather, particularly near burn scar areas that may be prone to mudslides or debris flows.

Forecasted heavy rain and potential flooding have prompted Santa Monica officials to postpone this Saturday’s recycling event to Friday, Dec. 6, the city announced.

The event, originally scheduled for Nov. 15, will now take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 2500 Michigan Ave. City officials apologized for the delay, citing safety concerns due to the weekend’s storm forecast.

Residents who are unable to attend the rescheduled event can still dispose of electronic waste and batteries through alternative recycling programs:

  • Residential Door-to-Door Pickup: Santa Monica offers free hazardous waste collection, including e-waste and batteries, through Clean Earth. Residents can schedule a pickup by calling (877) 443-2371.
  • Drop-Off Locations: LA S.A.F.E. centers accept household hazardous waste, including electronics. Hours and accepted materials are listed on the LA Sanitation website.

The city thanks residents for their understanding and encourages participation in the December event.
