Consumers advised to discard potentially contaminated tuna.
Consumers are being urged to check their pantries after Tri-Union Seafoods said certain canned tuna products linked to an earlier recall were mistakenly distributed to stores.
The company said quarantined products connected to a February 2025 voluntary recall were inadvertently released by a third-party distributor in a press release. The original recall was issued after a supplier alerted Tri-Union Seafoods to a manufacturing defect affecting the “easy open” pull-tab lids on a limited number of cans. Officials said the defect could compromise the seal over time, potentially allowing leakage or contamination with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that can cause a rare but potentially fatal form of food poisoning.
Tri-Union Seafoods said the latest action was taken after the company learned that some of the quarantined cases were shipped to retail locations in California. The affected products were distributed to a limited number of stores, including Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions.
The recalled items include specific products and can codes, which are printed on the bottom of the cans. They are:
- Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Olive Oil, 5.0 oz four-pack
UPC: 4800073265
Can Code: S84N D2L
Best if Used By: Jan. 21, 2028 - Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Extra Virgin Olive Oil with Sea Salt, 5.0 oz

Tri-Union Seafoods said consumers should not use the products, even if the cans appear normal or do not smell spoiled. Anyone who feels unwell after consuming the product should seek immediate medical attention.
Consumers who have the recalled tuna are advised to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund, discard it, or contact the company directly to request a retrieval kit and a coupon for a replacement product.
