Suspects fled the scene after a vehicle dispute turned deadly.
Detectives are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Saturday night near the intersection of 4th Street and Olympic Drive following an apparent road rage altercation.
Santa Monica Police Department officers arrived at the scene at approximately 10:30 p.m., where they discovered an adult male with a gunshot wound. Despite life-saving efforts by police and Santa Monica Fire Department personnel, the victim was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Officials are withholding his identity pending notification of next of kin and formal confirmation by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Preliminary evidence suggests the shooting stemmed from a confrontation between the occupants of two vehicles. During the dispute, a suspect reportedly opened fire, striking the victim at least once before fleeing the area in a vehicle. No suspects were in custody as of Sunday morning.
Investigators are treating the case as an active and ongoing homicide inquiry. Authorities are asking anyone with information regarding the incident to contact Sergeant Shaun Cooney of the Criminal Investigations Division at 310-458-8401, ext. 2249, or the Watch Commander at 310-458-8427.
