Oscars 2026: Big Wins, Bold Conan O’Brien Hosting and a Best Picture Victory for One Battle After Another

Full list of Academy Award winners as Conan O’Brien hosts a ceremony filled with music, humor, and emotional speeches.

By Dolores Quintana

The 98th Academy Awards were a remarkable ceremony. The pageantry and drama were there, but there was also wild hilarity, moving musical performances, many scathing yet funny jokes about the world that we are living in, and various entertainment industry issues. While it lasted over three hours, it never dragged as some previous Oscar nights had.

Host Conan O’Brian didn’t hold back in his trenchant commentary and even aimed his barbs as far as The White House, or Mar-a-Lago, despite the fear that keeps criticism muzzled. O’Brien was more than willing to really go for it, right from the opening skit. His second time as a host was most welcome.

Many of the winners were not a surprise, but watching Amy Madigan and her husband of forty two years, Ed Harris, in a warm and loving embrace was a balm for the heart. It was also wonderful to see actors and directors being supportive of those nominees who did win, even if they “lost.”

Director Paul Thomas Anderson, when accepting the award for Best Picture, said, “In 1975, the Oscar nominees for Best Picture were Dog Day AfternoonOne Flew Over The Cuckoo’s NestJawsNashville, and Barry Lyndon. There is no ‘best’ among them. There is just what that mood might be that day. But we’re happy to be part of this: a wonderful, wonderful journey with our fellow nominees, our fellow filmmakers, and our fellow filmmakers that even weren’t recognized by the Academy. There’s so many great films this year.”

The performance of the Best Song nominee from Ryan Coogler’s Sinners was a marvelous and magical experience. If you missed it or didn’t watch the broadcast, I recommend watching the performance, which is a celebration of music, dance, and art, especially the blues. The moment when retired ballet superstar Misty Copeland comes out of the crowd of performers brings tears to the eye.

As the Twitter account for the film festival Beyond Fest said, “Cinema won.”

"The Infiltrator” Going Undercover in the Drug Trade:

“The Infiltrator” is a fascinating true story of a U.S. customs agent named Bob Mazur, played quite well and believably by Bryan Cranston. The movie takes place in 1985 with Mazur going undercover for the government to gain the trust of drug suppliers working for the Medellín Cartel and other corrupt bankers as he poses as a money launderer.
