Organizers said the discussion will focus on how legacy businesses contribute to the local economy and what it takes to sustain them over decades.

A virtual event highlighting long-standing local businesses and their role in the community will stream this weekend as part of the Santa Monica Mosaic series.

The free livestream, titled Old Friends: A Toast to Legacy Business, is scheduled for Sunday, March 22, from 5 to 6:15 p.m. Organizers said the discussion will focus on how legacy businesses contribute to the local economy and what it takes to sustain them over decades.

Featured participants include representatives from Cuttin’ Up! Barbershop, Bay Cities Italian Deli & Bakery and McCabe’s Guitar Shop, all longstanding establishments in Santa Monica.

Xavier Banister, who took over Cuttin’ Up! Barbershop in 2004, is expected to discuss continuing a decades-long legacy in the city’s Broadway neighborhood. The shop has served as both a business and community gathering space, offering haircuts as well as a place for residents to connect.

Walt McGraw, co-owner of McCabe’s Guitar Shop, will speak about carrying on a family-run music store known as a hub for musicians and music enthusiasts. The Pico Boulevard shop has long been recognized as a cultural fixture where both beginners and experienced players gather.

Nina Fresco, a local historian and community leader, will share insights on Bay Cities Italian Deli & Bakery, one of the city’s oldest businesses. Fresco has been involved in several civic roles, including the Santa Monica Planning Commission and Landmarks Commission.
