The heart behind 24 Hour Caregivers, a home care service agency that prioritizes patient comfort, well-being and dignity, stems from a deeply personal and formative experience of its founder.
Founded by Allen Tahir in 2008, the agency first opened its doors in Thousand Oaks, California, to address the growing demand for senior care and simultaneous shortage of caregivers.
Tahir is the son of immigrants from Azerbaijan who were physicians in their home country. Starting over in the United States, his parents had to rebuild their careers from the ground up while raising a family, before eventually becoming nurses.
Growing up, Tahir and his brothers witnessed their parents’ unwavering compassion in caregiving — a foundation that helped shape his path.
“I grew up watching my parents help others. Now, every morning I wake up and I want to help people, too — that trickled down from the level of care my parents provided, that compassion that I saw from my parents,” Tahir said.
Today, 24 Hour Caregivers is a family-run agency with a shared purpose.
“This is our calling in life. Our aging population needs help now. Not tomorrow or the day after,” he said.
URGENCY OF CARE
California is home to more than six million residents over the age 65, and the demand for in-home care continues to outpace the available workforce.
“There’s a huge shortage in California with caregivers,” he said. “Almost every day, several times a day, people are trying to get help.”
In Los Angeles County, the Purposeful Aging Los Angeles Initiative estimates that 2.5 million — 26% of the county’s population — will be aged 60 or older by 2030. The expansion of 24 Hour Caregivers over the last 18 years — from one location to a total of 12 across the state — reflects that need.
From companionship to chronic conditions, hospice and palliative care, 24 Hour Caregivers is built on a foundation of trust, training and personalized care. To meet the demand for caregivers, the agency relies heavily on recruiting, training and retaining caregivers across its 12 locations. All staff members are background-checked, trained and supported, with an emphasis on compassion as much as skill.
“You have to take care of the caregivers so they can give the best care to people in need. Good people are hard to come by, so we hold onto them. We have some caregivers who have been with us since the beginning,” Tahir said.
IMPACTING FAMILIES
Maintaining long-term staff and consistent service is something Tahir believes directly impacts families.
While many adult children live away from their parents, or are balancing careers and raising families of their own, many seniors are left without daily support. This isolation can lead to vulnerability, and sometimes, a decline in cognitive health.
But having a caregiver can change that.
“Caregivers are advocates for seniors, companions and protectors. Sometimes, it’s the smallest gestures that matter most,” Tahir said.
Simple acts — taking out the trash or helping around the house — can make a meaningful difference.
“Receiving help doesn’t mean losing independence,” Tahir said. “It’s helping them continue their independence.”
With services ranging from 24-hour in-home care to hospice and skilled nursing, the company continues to expand its reach in Los Angeles and surrounding areas.
Nearing almost two decades in business, Tahir said his mission remains the same.
“We believe in the power of empathy and connection,” Tahir said. “And there’s no better feeling than helping the people who need it the most.”
