On the five-year anniversary of the collision, Hoyt plans to depart Portland on July 17 and ride roughly 1,320 miles down the Pacific Coast Highway to Santa Monica over 44 days.
Five years after a car nearly killed him on the final stretch of a bike trip, Cody Hoyt is returning to Los Angeles to finish the journey he never completed.
Hoyt was riding from Portland to Santa Monica in July 2021 when he was struck by a vehicle in Los Angeles. The crash left him with a broken leg, broken shoulder, 10 broken ribs and punctured lungs.
Now, on the five-year anniversary of the collision, Hoyt plans to depart Portland on July 17 and ride roughly 1,320 miles down the Pacific Coast Highway to Santa Monica over 44 days. He is calling the journey the REPAIR(as) Tour.
“I am tired of these injuries defining who I am and what I can do,” Hoyt said in his GoFundMe campaign.
The ride will mostly follow the Pacific Coast Highway, with Hoyt expecting to arrive in Santa Monica at the end of August.
A GoFundMe has been launched to help cover costs for meals, gear, bike repairs, campsites and other expenses during the ride. As of Tuesday, the campaign had raised $455 of its $1,300 goal.
Hoyt said the trip represents the capstone of his long recovery.
“I’ll depart my home in Portland, Oregon on the five-year anniversary of my collision via bike and continue south until I get to Los Angeles and finish the ride I was trying to do when I got hit,” he wrote.
