The program includes “Hollingsworth Celebration” by Robert Sheldon, “Joy Revisited” by Frank Ticheli, “Beatles: Love” arranged by Jay Bocook and more.

The Santa Monica College Emeritus Concert Band will present a free concert titled “Spring Celebration” on Sunday, May 3, at 1 p.m. at The Eli & Edythe Broad Stage in Santa Monica.

The performance, conducted by Yosuke Miyoshi, will feature guest band directors Pedro Ramos, Christopher Estrada and Mark Johnsen.

The program includes “Hollingsworth Celebration” by Robert Sheldon, “Joy Revisited” by Frank Ticheli, “Beatles: Love” arranged by Jay Bocook, “A Sky So Boundless” by Katahj Copley, and “Sesquicentennial Exposition March” by John Philip Sousa.

“We are fortunate in the SMC Emeritus Concert Band because we have many current and retired band directors in the ensemble,” Miyoshi said. “We are tapping into the collective knowledge of the ensemble and having some of the band directors conduct at this upcoming concert.”

Pedro Ramos currently directs the band at Theodore Roosevelt High School in Boyle Heights. Christopher Estrada directs the band at Washington Prep High School in Los Angeles. Mark Johnsen is a retired band director who previously taught at Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies in Tarzana.

The Emeritus Concert Band, which has performed free concerts since 1979, consists of approximately 60 musicians of varying ages and backgrounds. The ensemble is part of Santa Monica College’s Emeritus program, established in 1975 to offer free classes and programs for older adults.

Ample free parking will be available. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
