“Sustainable Works” Works To Sustain Awareness With Bergamot Event:

Sustainable Works is an increasingly relevant non-profit environmental education organization, whose raison d’etre is to promote awareness and action pertaining to sustainability, and resource efficiency in Santa Monica and beyond. Sustainable Works is hosting its second annual fundraising event on Thursday, September 10th, 6:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m. at Writer’s Boot Camp in Bergamot Station (2525 Michigan Avenue, Building I, Santa Monica, CA 90405). This happening promises to be fun and informative, with a myriad of attractions all aimed at supporting Sustainable Works’ urgent mission to effectively transform communities, colleges, and businesses through environmental education and action.

Entitled “Tomorrow Starts Today,” the fundraiser will feature organic beer and wine, an eco-friendly silent auction and drawing, an educational green room, and an artist’s gallery. The silent auction will feature donations from local businesses such as Sony Pictures, Universal Music Group, Rustic Canyon Wine Bar, Patagonia and Jurlique, with artists including Shepard Fairey, Gavin Farrell, Samuel Moyer, Anne Shackman, and Sierra Pecheur. Organic local cuisine will follow, with an update on the organization and Eco Star Award winners. The Eco Star Award is handed out to an environmental champion at a business, a local resident, and a student who have excelled and inspired the concepts of sustainability into their lives and others. Comedian and Santa Monica resident Jake Johannsen will be hosting the evening, followed by dancing with KCRW DJ Michael Barnes.

Sustainable Works currently has its focus on three primary programs designed to further transform Santa Monica and beyond into environmentally aware examples of eco-principled community living, thus benefiting all sectors of the city, residential and business.

COMMUNITY GREENING: The Residential and Student Greening programs are 6-9 week workshops that assess individual impacts, educate on sustainability topics, and provide recommendations and resources for action.

BUSINESS GREENING: Our Business Greening Program is an ongoing consultation that includes an initial assessment, recommendations and resources for implementation, employee education, and follow-up. Our programs bring the concepts of sustainability, as they relate to urban living, into the homes, businesses and lives of our participants. We offer tools to reduce their impact on the environment while promoting the development of local economies and healthy communities.

WATER PROGRAMS: In addition to our three core programs, Sustainable Works has also successfully developed and implemented water efficiency and urban runoff reduction programs. These programs help the city reduce water consumption; decrease urban runoff, and assists in meeting citywide resource conservation goals and NPDES permit requirements.

Sustainable Works’ programs track the progress of participants in their efforts to reduce environmental impacts, and promote sustainability. They first educate about the environmental problems, and then offer a variety of solutions so that they can take immediate action.

“We have to act now-the urgency of the environmental crisis prevents us from stalling until the economic crisis is resolved. Fortunately, solutions exist that solve both problems simultaneously but we have to begin the transition. We simply cannot wait any longer. Everyone should realize Tomorrow Starts Today!” said Barent Roth, Executive Director, Sustainable Works.
