Basketball Game Leads to Fight in Santa Monica: APB: My Team’s Better Than Your Team!

On Saturday, May 28, at 7:50 p.m., officers of the Santa Monica Police Department went to the area of Seventh Street and Wilshire Boulevard in response to a report of an assault that had just occurred. When the officers arrived they spoke with two suspects and the victim they had allegedly beaten.

The officers learned that the victim and one of the suspects had been involved in an argument over a basketball game. The argument had become physical and both of the suspects had begun hitting and kicking the victim about his head and body. After these “men” had finished their performance, the victim got up and called 911. The victim was eventually transported to a local hospital where he was treated for lacerations to his face, and a broken nose. The suspects were arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon. One of them, a 46-year-old Santa Monica man, had no bail set because of a parole violation. The other suspect, a 48-year-old homeless Santa Monica man, had bail set at $30,000.

Editor’s Note: These reports are part of a regular police coverage series entitled “Alert Police Blotter” (APB), which injects some minor editorial into certain police activities in Santa Monica. Not all of the Mirror’s coverage of incidents involving police are portrayed in this manner. More serious crimes and police-related activities are regularly reported without editorial in the pages of the Santa Monica Mirror and its website, smmirror.com
