Santa Monica’s Universally Accessible Playground Design Concepts Available Online:

The design concepts for Santa Monica’s first universally accessible playground are now available online at www.facebook.com/smbuap.

The community is invited to view the images and let the project team know what you think.

The concepts will also be presented at a special joint meeting of the Disabilities and Recreation & Parks Commissions on Monday, Oct. 3, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Ken Edwards Center. Input on the design concepts will be taken through Oct. 9, 2011.

“We have two solid directions for this special playground. They both take advantage of the fabulous setting we’ve been given to work with – Santa Monica Bay. We hope the community is as excited about them as we are,” said project designer Katherine Spitz.

The city’s first universally accessible playground will provide an opportunity for children of all levels of ability to enjoy time at the beach in a way that might not have been possible before. It will also be a place for children to socialize with their differently-abled peers, providing a path toward removing the stigma often associated with disabilities.

The public is encouraged to attend the meeting of the Recreation & Parks and Disabilities Commission on Monday, Oct. 3.
