Chamber Sponsors Community Youth Job Fair:

Next Wednesday, May 25,  Santa Monica High School will be the site of a Community Youth Job Fair that is being sponsored by the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce from 3:30 to 7 p.m. in the school’s cafeteria located at 601 Pico Boulevard.

At the job fair, Santa Monica business owners will recruit motivated youth, ages 14-24, for summer, seasonal and permanent jobs.  Young people should bring a driver’s license or school ID card as proof of Santa Monica residency, a resume and should dress appropriately.

According to Chamber President Kathy Dodson “a wide range of employers will be participating including the entertainment industry, the auto dealers, the retail industry as well as many others.”

High school juniors who are interested in studying entrepreneurship may apply for scholarships to a summer class at the University of Southern California on the subject.  To qualify for the class, applicants must complete  their junior year this spring and bring proof of their G.P.A. and one-page essays that explain why they would like the scholarship, as well as their career goals and interest in entrepreneurship to the Chamber of Commerce’s fair table.

Dr. Bill Croxton will teach the daily four-week course from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at USC.  Applicants must be able to provide their own transportation. One scholarship will be awarded.  Questions should be directed to Dr. Croxton at (213) 740-0649.

The Job Fair is being coordinated for the Chamber of Commerce by the WorkSource Center in West Hollywood that is operated by the Jewish Family Vocational Services.

It is the first step in an initiative outlined by the Chamber   at the City-sponsored gang violence workshop in April to help stem gang violence in Santa Monica by offering job development and employment opportunities. The City and local non-profit agencies are assisting with youth outreach for the Job Fair and with job preparation workshops, aimed particularly at Pico neighborhood youth.
