Citywide Reads Seeks Suggestions for 2006:

The Santa Monica Citywide Reads Advisory Committee is now soliciting nominations for its 2006 iteration.

The purpose of the Citywide Reads program is “to encourage a culture of reading and to promote book-centered dialogue in Santa Monica,” in the words of a committee spokesperson.

According to the committee, the 2006 Citywide Reads book should be “fiction and amenable to good group discussion, [have] broad appeal, [be] challenging but not exclusive, and available in a variety of formats, such as paperback and audiobook.”

The 2003 selection was Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, by Dai Sijie. In 2004, it was The Berlin Stories, by Christopher Isherwood. The 2005 Citywide Reads choice was Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner.
