Main Street Gallery Presents New Pair Of Abstract Artists:

By Patty Tedesco

haleARTS S P A C E holds art receptions every two weeks or so. Owner and curator Michael Hale and gallery director Sean Hemeon meet with new artists on a weekly basis. The gallery features emerging and established mid-career artists and has planned exhibitions featuring new talent well into 2014.

Next Friday, July 12, the gallery presents an opening reception celebrating the work of abstract artists Karen Sikie and Michael Temple.

Hale discusses the upcoming show,

“The theme is about the relationship of movement, color, nature, and hidden messages,” Hale said. “The techniques are quite different, yet very relatable between the two artists being featured. Both display a sort of chaos and ultimate structure quite brilliantly.”

Although the show is untitled, the work of each artist seems to mirror the other’s – shedding light on the language that each artist chooses to speak.

Sikie creates “Paper Mosaics,” a specialized form of collage.

She has worked with various interior designers installing “Paper Mosaic” murals in small interior spaces.

Temple has had a successful career in the music world.

Founder and percussionist of the popular band the Bonedaddys, Temple has toured all over the world, all the while consistently painting.

Temple has given up the typical “brush” in some instances and opted to use pallet knives, fake wood-graining tools, and other objects to make impressions on the canvas.

Hale said he was impressed with the art works.

“I was engaged in Mike Temple’s work the first time I saw it. It captures you,” Hale said. “At first glance, you feel a joy of observing wonderful abstract art, until it gradually begins to ‘speak’ to you.”

Temple’s work has been a part of many exhibitions in cities such as Kansas City, New Orleans, and Los Angeles. He recently participated in several group shows at Trunk Gallery and was a featured artist in the Santa Monica Airport Art Walk.

His work was also most recently seen as part of the “Rose Respectives” at the Rose Café in Venice.

When asked why Hale chose to put the two artists together in one show, he answered, “You’ll see.”

The opening reception, featuring artists Karen Sikie and Michael Temple, will be held on Friday, July 12 from 5-8 pm at haleARTS S P A C E, located at 2443 Main Street, at Edgemar Center for the Arts in Santa Monica. The exhibition will be on view through July 24.
