Enjoy Art, Workshops, Music At Santa Monica Airport ArtWalk This Saturday:

Free and open to all, the 8th Annual Airport ArtWalk this Saturday afternoon promises a chance to visit art studios, watch art demonstrations, and participate in art and theater workshops.

From noon to 5 pm, the event will also feature live music and food trucks in the airport’s converted airplane hangars.

The airport is an arts incubator and home to more than 60 artists and creative venues.

Painting, sculpture, ceramics, and mixed media will be represented and many artists sell work from their studios and offer refreshments.

Arena 1 Gallery will present the exhibit “Alternate Realities,” celebrating the work of 14 contemporary photographers.

The Santa Monica College Art Mentor Program will feature works from a select group of Art Department students invited to participate in this unique learning program, and Santa Monica College Ceramic Arts presents throwing and Raku firing demonstrations, as well as a communal ceramic art project for kids.

Ruskin Group Theatre will perform highlights of its popular monthly offering L.A. Café Plays and offers theater improvisation workshops for children.

Other hands-on activities for all ages include creating eco-friendly art using recycled latex house paint, making a self-watering terrarium out of recycled glass bottles and jars, and the favorite ArtWalk Stamp Hunt, which encourages exploration of the ArtWalk and airport with a prize for those who complete it.

Musical interludes will be provided throughout the day by 10-piece brass band, The Carmen Pérez Memorial Marching Band, performing a lively and eclectic repertoire of sounds and styles inspired by music from around the world.

Local restaurant Spitfire Grill serves traditional American food and is filled with WWII military and Douglas Aircraft memorabilia.

Four food trucks will serve a variety of savory and sweet including: The Lobos Truck with American comfort food with a twist; India Jones Chow Truck’s Indian street food; Sprinklesmobile cupcakes, and Kings Road Coffee Truck’s hot, iced or blended coffee drinks.

The Museum of Flying features displays and interpretive exhibits on the history of flight and the development and growth of the aviation and aerospace industry in Southern California.

Exhibits include a collection of original artifacts related to the Douglas Aircraft Company, aviation art, and an array of aircraft from a Wright Flyer replica to aircraft of the jet age.

The Airport’s Demonstration Gardens will offer tours of three different sustainable garden designs including eco-friendly lawn alternatives, a vegetable garden, private sanctuary and an outdoor room.

The tours will include tips on how to create green gardens.

The events will all take place Santa Monica Airport, along Airport Avenue between Bundy Drive and 23rd Street in Santa Monica.

The Airport ArtWalk is free of charge, and open to all. No reservations are required. Parking and bike valet are also free.

The ArtWalk is presented and produced by the City of Santa Monica Cultural Affairs and Airport Divisions.
