The Latest from SMPD: Alert Police Blotter:

Hidden Agenda

On Wednesday, June 8, at 11:30 p.m. officers of the Santa Monica Police Department who were on a routine patrol in the area of 11th Street and Olympic Boulevard spotted a man who was acting in a very suspicious manner. The officers approached this man and as they did so they noticed that he had surreptitiously attempted to conceal an unknown object inside his waistband. The officers spoke with this man and determined that he was on probation for numerous weapons violations. The officers searched this individual and discovered that he possessed a screwdriver in his waistband. This is not the typical location that one would store such a tool so the officers investigated further and found that this man also possessed narcotics paraphernalia. This 31-year-old homeless man was arrested and charged with possession of narcotics paraphernalia and a probation violation. Bail was set in in the amount of $20,000.

Offline Purchase

On Tuesday, June 7, at 8:41 p.m. officers of the Santa Monica Police Department were called out to the Apple Store, located at 1415 Third Street Promenade, in order to investigate a report of a man who was attempting to use a credit card that appeared to be stolen in an effort to purchase merchandise from the store. Loss prevention agents from The Apple Store had apprehended the man at the location after they had recognized him as a person who was suspected of suspicious activity at other Apple Stores. The officers arrived at the location and interviewed the suspect and after investigating the officers determined that this man had attempted to use a fraudulent Texas drivers’ license and a fraudulent credit card in order to obtain items at the store. This man was arrested and later charged with attempt to defraud. This 25-year-old resident of New York was given bail in the amount of $20,000.

Unclean!

On Wednesday, June 8, at 2:27 p.m. officers of the Santa Monica Police Department were called out to the Bonus Car Wash, located at 2800 Lincoln Boulevard, in order to investigate a report of an individual who was in the process of disrupting business at the location. When the officers arrived at the car wash they investigated and discovered that the suspect had put his car through the car wash but had been dissatisfied with the results of the wash. Subsequently, this man had refused to pay for the car wash and had remained at the location while being disruptive to other customers. The officers asked the man to leave the car wash but he refused so the officers arrested this 36-year-old Los Angeles resident and he was charged with defrauding an innkeeper (a multi-purpose charge, so to speak). Bail was set at $5,000.

Editor’s Note: These reports are part of a regular police coverage series entitled “Alert Police Blotter” (APB), which injects some minor editorial into certain police activities in Santa Monica. Not all of The Mirror’s coverage of incidents involving police are portrayed in this manner. More serious crimes and police-related activities are regularly reported without editorial in the pages of the Santa Monica Mirror and its website, smmirror.com.
