Next Week: Learn More About Your City Clerk’s Office

Monday, May 8 kicks off City Clerks Week in Santa Monica and across the country. City Clerk Denise Anderson-Warren and her team will offer special programming aimed at educating the public about the role of City Clerks and sharing Santa Monica history through the lens of historical documents.

An online contest will be held May 8 – 13 using publicdocs.smgov.net, a public portal for City Council documents dating back to the 1920s. Participants will be asked five questions about using the portal and all who participate will be entered to win a prize. Visit smgov.net/clerk to get contest details.

Through the portal, the public may research past City Council items outside business hours and skip the Public Records Request process. Denise Anderson-Warren explains, “The advantage of the Public Portal over the website is that the portal offers final and often executed documents.”

Next week, a City Hall display will feature original documents not available in the Public Portal such as handwritten minutes approving the incorporation of Santa Monica from the late 1800s, deeds acquiring City property, and resolutions and contracts approved at the time of the City’s Centennial Celebration in 1975.  The display will be available during business hours and evenings of public meetings in the Council Chambers.

If you stop by City Hall, you can get a promotional item from the City Clerk’s Office in room 102.

If you don’t come to City Hall, follow the City of Santa Monica on Twitter for a week in the life look at the City Clerk’s Department. Follow along using #CityClerksWeek.

At its last meeting, the Santa Monica City Council issued a proclamation designating the week of May 7-13, 2017 as “City Clerks Week.” This is part of a national effort by the International Institute of City Clerks (IIMC) and the City Clerk’s Association of California (CCAC) to increase the public’s awareness of City Clerks and the vital services they provide.
