If you are fortysomething, divorced and find yourself back in the dating scene, then Fornicationally Challenged is a one-woman show that you should find quite entertaining.
Writer and performer Judi Lee Brandwein takes us through her pre- and post-divorce life, creating some interesting characters along the way, including her chain-smoking best friend, whom you could almost swear was on stage with her. In her quest to break her three-year celibacy, Brandwein introduces a variety of men who, for one reason or another, fail to deliver the goods.
One-person shows can be problematic as it takes a great deal of talent to keep the audience engaged. However, under Mark Travis’ able direction, Brandwein more than fills the stage with a crisp monologue that moves along at a good pace and is highly skilled at breathing life into her invisible “supporting cast.” Fornicationally Challenged is a lively, fun show that you might want to see with a girl friend, as judging from the laughter, the insights seemed to hit home with the predominantly female audience.
Fornicationally Challenged, The Hudson Guild Theatre, 6539 Santa Monica Blvd., Hollywood, 323.960.7721. Running through July 5. All seats $20.
