Santa Monica Receives $70,000 Donation From Kiwanis Charities for Scoreboards in Two Parks

Donation will fund the installation of new scoreboards at Historic Belmar Park and Los Amigos Park

The Santa Monica City Council has received a donation of $70,000 from Kiwanis Charities of Santa Monica to fund the installation of new scoreboards at two parks in the city. The decision was taken at a meeting on February 28, 2023, and will benefit Historic Belmar Park and Los Amigos Park.

Los Amigos Park is a public park located on the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District’s Muir/SMASH campus and has been home to Santa Monica Pony Baseball since 1952. The Kiwanis donation will enable the park to install new scoreboards, fulfilling a desire expressed by the community after two years of field usage.

Historic Belmar Park, which opened at the Civic Center in February 2021, will also benefit from the donation. The Kiwanis donation will enable the park to add a scoreboard to the field, which will enhance equitable play opportunities for the many youth and adult residents who engage in sports activities in the parks.

“The City of Santa Monica appreciates the generosity of the Santa Monica Kiwanis Club and its commitment to serving our community,” said Mayor Gleam Davis. “We are grateful to accept this donation that will enhance equitable play opportunities for the many youth and adult residents who engage in sports activities in our parks.”

The Kiwanis Club of Santa Monica has a long history of supporting the community with its charitable division, Kiwanis Charities of Santa Monica, through acts of service, student scholarships, and other financial contributions. This includes a $50,000 donation to the City in 2015 that funded a new playground at Ozone Park.

Neil Carrey, a longtime Santa Monica resident and Kiwanis Board Member noted the donation that it was in honor of the Club’s 100th Anniversary.

“As a former Chair of the Santa Monica Recreation and Parks Commission and as the Immediate Past President of the Kiwanis Club of Santa Monica, I am thrilled that the Kiwanis Club has donated these scoreboards to the City in honor of the Club’s 100th Anniversary,” Carrey said.

The City Council declared February 28, 2023, Kiwanis Day in the City of Santa Monica to recognize the Kiwanis Club’s meaningful services to youth in the community.
