City’s Animal Shelter Prepares For “Kitten Season”

The Santa Monica Animal Shelter Is About To Be Inundated With Kittens Looking For A Permanent Home

Every springtime, the city’s shelter becomes inundated with numerous litters of affectionate kittens, resulting in the shelter reaching its maximum capacity for cats. “Kitten season,” which occurs from April to August, is a term used to describe this period.

The shelter currently houses kittens ranging from just a few hours old to several months old. Three primary ways in which the kittens arrive at the shelter. Firstly, individuals find kittens within the city limits and bring them to the shelter. Secondly, residents bring their pregnant cats to the shelter. Lastly, concerned individuals call the shelter to report kittens or cat families in need, prompting Animal Control Officers to come to their rescue.

The kittens at the shelter require several months of care before they are ready for adoption. Monetary donations made at smasf.org are highly appreciated and help cover veterinary expenses, surgeries, and any additional medical needs that may arise. Furthermore, the shelter is in need of kitten food, and individuals can contribute by visiting their wishlist on chewy.com, even with a small donation.

Additionally, the second annual shelter Open House Fundraiser is scheduled for June 3, 2023, from 12-3pm at the shelter site (1640 9th Street). The event will feature live music from a local band, face painting, a raffle, an exciting auction, and various enjoyable activities for the entire family. All funds raised at the event significantly impact the care and well-being of the animals at the Santa Monica Animal Shelter.
