Juneteenth Panel Discussion Coming to Santa Monica Public Library

The Discussion Will Highlight the Ongoing Struggle for Emancipation

On June 14 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., the Santa Monica Public Main Library, located at 601 Santa Monica Blvd., will host a Juneteenth panel discussion organized by CommUNITY, a City of Santa Monica-recognized affinity group for staff who identify as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color.

In collaboration with the City Manager’s Office, this event aims to shed light on Juneteenth and the ongoing struggle for emancipation among Black Americans.

Distinguished panelists participating in the discussion include Dr. Alisa Orduña, a renowned professor, practitioner, policy analyst, collaborator, and thought leader in the field of homelessness services in the United States. Joining her is Dr. Amina Humphrey, a respected professor, artist, scholar, and researcher specializing in race and ethnic studies. The panel is further enriched by the expertise of Kyle Williams, MPA, a leader, technologist, and outdoorsman dedicated to creating safe and inclusive public natural spaces for all.

Throughout the session, the panelists will delve into various topics, including the disproportionate homelessness experienced by Black individuals, the broader significance of home and belonging for Black Americans since emancipation, the transformative power of education in achieving emancipation, and the importance of equity in accessing green spaces.
