Malibu Hosts 24th Annual Chumash Day Powwow at Malibu Bluffs Park

Celebration of Native American Culture and Heritage

The City of Malibu is gearing up to celebrate Native American history and culture at the 24th Annual Chumash Day Powwow and Intertribal Gathering, set to take place on Saturday, April 6, and Sunday, April 7, at Malibu Bluffs Park.

The event, which will be held at 24250 Pacific Coast Highway, invites all residents of Malibu and beyond to join in the festive cultural celebration honoring the area’s original inhabitants, the Chumash Native Americans, according to Mayor Steve Uhring.

“The Chumash Day Powwow and Intertribal Gathering is a wonderful opportunity to join with the Chumash People and many other native tribes to learn about and celebrate their history, art, music, dance, and culture,” Uhring said.

The festivities will kick off with an invocation and prayer led by Chumash elder Beverly Folkes. The event will feature Native American tribal ceremonies, dances, and special guest performances. Native American Head Staff include Randy Pico as MC, Vic Chavez as Arena Director, John Velasquez as Head Man, Kiara Flores as Head Woman, Nathaniel Gonzales as Head Young Man, and Fallen Star Padilla as Head Young Woman. Northern Drums, Blue Star, and Southern Drums, Hale and Company, will accompany the dancers.

Additionally, the event will host twenty Native American artisan vendors offering merchandise for sale, including jewelry, flutes, moccasins, beading accessories, leatherworks, pottery, dream catchers, and more. Attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of food options from vendors such as Bison Burger, Drizzle, Gostosas Thrill from Brazil, Rice Balls of Fire, Salt ‘N Pepper, and Tropic Truck.

The family-friendly cultural event is free and open to all, with no tickets or RSVPs required. Event hours are from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with a Grand Entry at 12:00 PM each day. Free general parking will be available at the corner of Civic Center Way and Webb Way (23575 Civic Center Way), with complimentary shuttle rides provided to and from Malibu Bluffs Park. Parking for people with disabilities will be available at Malibu City Hall (23825 Stuart Ranch Road), with free Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant shuttle rides. There is no on-site parking at Malibu Bluffs Park.
For more information, contact the Community Services Department at 310-317-1364 or visit the event webpage.
