James Cameron Didn’t Want Arnold Schwarzenegger As Terminator Protagonist

Arnold Schwarzenegger is the image of The Terminator thanks to his amazing role in the first films of the James Cameron franchise. However, the Austrian bodybuilder wasn’t welcomed by Cameron as the film’s titular role in the beginning.

It Wasn’t The Body They Were Looking For

James Cameron had a really clear idea in mind while developing The Terminator in the early 190s. In his vision, the futuristic cyborg assassin should have been a leaner actor, capable of blending into society with ease. The bodybuilding fame of Schwarzenegger didn’t align with this starting point. The Austrian bodybuilder who became an actor wasn’t the best fit initially, thanks to his stature and, obviously, his muscles.

But Schwarzenegger’s body wasn’t the only problem Cameron had with him: his lack of experience as an actor and with English being his second language raised concerns about his ability to deliver a strong performance as well. The director had initially preferred casting Lance Henriksen as the relentless cyborg, as he thought that a subtler, less physically dominant actor could bring more menace to the role. This vision contrasted with the larger-than-life persona Schwarzenegger was known for.

Schwarzenegger Changes Cameron’s Mind

If that was the initial idea, why did Schwarzenegger end up being the chosen one? The tide turned when both the actor and the director met to discuss a different role. The Austrian was supposed to have a role in the film as Kyle Reese, the human soldier sent back in time to protect Sarah Connor. However, during the meeting, Schwarzenegger expressed his thoughts on how the Terminator should act, emphasizing the character’s emotionless demeanor and mechanical efficiency in eliminating targets. These insights surprised Cameron in a good way, who began reconsidering his initial doubts.

Quickly, Cameron realized how well Schwarzenegger understood the character and started seeing the Austrian’s physicality as a pro instead of a problem. The character of the Terminator would not need to blend it after all: the pursuit of its mission could be amplified by Schwarzenegger’s imposing figure. Thus, he landed the iconic role, even though Cameron once thought him unsuitable for the part.

Nowadays It’s Impossible To Imagine Someone Else As The Terminator

It’s very difficult to imagine The Terminator without Arnold Schwarzenegger. If you ask anyone about it, the Austrian actor and former Governor of California seemed to be the perfect fit for the role. His performance solidified the film as a sci-fi classic and became a defining moment in Schwarzenegger’s career. The uncanny blend of robotic detachment and menace of his catchphrase “I’ll be back” turned out to be one of the most quoted lines in cinema history. His image is now in everything related to the franchise, from slot games available at Jackpot City to videogames, posters, and everything in between.

At the same time, the minimalistic approach of Schwarzenegger’s portrayal was a perfect hit. He had fewer lines than usual and there was more emphasis on his physical presence, which fit perfectly with the character’s machine-like nature. Cameron’s original concerns about Schwarzenegger’s acting abilities became irrelevant, as the actor’s performance was perfect for a cyborg: cold, calculating, and unstoppable.
