Malibu’s Skate Scene Gets a Boost with New Permanent Park Approval

Skateboarding Community Is Set to Get a Top-Tier Facility

The Malibu City Council has approved a $4.1 million contract to construct the long-awaited Malibu Permanent Skate Park, marking a significant step in the city’s commitment to expanding recreational opportunities and preserving its skate culture.

The 12,500-square-foot facility, designed by the globally recognized California Skateparks, will be built by C.S. Legacy Construction, Inc. The project, which has been in the works for several years, is set to include an array of street and transition skating features such as stairs, rails, ledges, banks, a flow bowl, quarter pipes, spine, extensions, and waterfalls, catering to skaters of all skill levels.

The skate park’s final design reflects years of public engagement, with residents and skaters contributing input through community meetings and surveys conducted in 2020 and 2021. Officials say this collaborative approach helped shape a space that meets the diverse needs of the local skating community.

Malibu Mayor Doug Stewart praised the project, emphasizing its role beyond just recreation.

“This skate park is more than just a recreational facility — it will be a gathering place that fosters community, promotes healthy lifestyles and embraces Malibu’s deep-rooted skate culture. We look forward to watching generations of skaters enjoy this incredible new space.”

Construction is set to begin in April 2025, with completion expected by fall 2025. In the meantime, the Temporary Skate Park will remain open as much as possible, ensuring skaters still have a dedicated space to practice while the permanent facility is being built.

In addition to approving the construction contract, the City Council has directed staff to explore potential naming rights for the skate park, in line with City Policy #52 on naming public facilities. Proposals will be presented to the Council in the coming months.
