Dedicated SAMOHI Employee, Orozco Leaves Behind a Legacy of Care
The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) issued a statement announcing the passing of SAMOHI’s longtime groundkeeper written by Gail Pinsker, Chief Communications Officer:
We are sad to share the news: Abel Orozco, dedicated 17-year SMMUSD employee, has passed away. In 2008, Abel applied for the position of groundskeeper with SMMUSD. Confident in his calling, he saw Santa Monica High School and felt it was his mission to help beautify the campus for the students and community. Abel proudly served the district for 17 years, dedicating himself to his work until his unexpected passing this month.
Throughout his time with SMMUSD, Abel was known for his unwavering work ethic, diligence, and the meaningful relationships he cultivated. He formed deep connections with colleagues, students, staff, teachers, and coaches—always going out of his way to care for and uplift those around him. Whether through a well-timed joke or a heartfelt compliment, Abel brought joy and laughter to every corner of campus.
At home, Abel spoke often and proudly about his work. He wore Samohi gear wherever he went, carrying his love for the school and community with him. Just as he gave his best to the world, he poured his heart into his family—serving as a stronghold, a source of unwavering support, and the glue that kept everyone together.
Abel leaves behind an irreplaceable legacy and a profound absence. He will be deeply missed and is survived by his beloved wife, son, two daughters, and grandchildren.
The Orozco family extends their deepest gratitude for the love and support shown to Abel and their family during this time.
