Caltrans to Close Lanes Along State Route 2 for Pavement Improvement Project

In West Los Angeles, up to one lane in each direction of Santa Monica Boulevard will be closed between Wellesley Avenue and Bundy Drive throughout the week

Caltrans will close lanes and restrict parking along parts of State Route 2 in West Los Angeles and Echo Park next week as crews continue work on a multimodal pavement improvement project, the agency announced Friday.

Daytime construction is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. between Nov. 17 and Nov. 23, though parking restrictions will remain in place around the clock, Caltrans said. The work includes curb, gutter and sidewalk repairs across multiple segments of the corridor.

In West Los Angeles, up to one lane in each direction of Santa Monica Boulevard will be closed between Wellesley Avenue and Bundy Drive throughout the week. Parking will be prohibited along the same stretch, and the Big Blue Bus stop at Main Street and Santa Monica Boulevard has been temporarily relocated to Carmelina Avenue.

In Echo Park, up to two lanes of Alvarado Street between Clinton Street and Montrose Street will be closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Up to one lane will be closed overnight and early morning between 4 p.m. and 9 a.m. Parking will also be banned along that segment. The LA Metro bus stop at Kent Street and Alvarado Street has been moved, and riders are being directed to stops at U.S. 101 and Alvarado Street or at Sunset Boulevard and Alvarado Street.

Access to business driveways will be maintained during the closures, Caltrans said, though motorists should expect shoulder and parking restrictions. Signs will be posted ahead of any parking limitations.

The $70.2 million project spans several portions of SR-2, including Santa Monica Boulevard from Centinela Avenue to Interstate 405, Santa Monica Boulevard from La Brea Avenue to U.S. 101 in Hollywood, and Alvarado Street/Glendale Boulevard from the U.S. 101 ramps to the SR-2 terminus in Echo Park.

Once completed, officials say the project will extend pavement life and improve safety along the corridor. Caltrans warned that schedules may change due to weather or operational needs and that nearby residents may experience noise, vibration and dust during construction.

Current traffic conditions are available on QuickMap, and residents can sign up for project notifications through Caltrans. The agency urged drivers to “Be Work Zone Alert” and “Slow for the Cone Zone.”
