“I’m an improviser,” says Erik Yates, who plays banjo, guitar, ukulele, and other assorted instruments for Northern California band Hot Buttered Rum. “Even just the same song, I find a different way to play it every night.” Drawing heavily from bluegrass and other styles of American roots music, Hot Buttered Rum has become a regular feature on the outdoor music festival circuit, where the band plays a mix of original and cover tunes. Check out Hot Buttered Rum indoors at the Temple Bar, where it will be joined by Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band.
Recovered Music by Exiled German-Jewish Performers

In an event honoring Maestro James Conlon at the Recovered Voices program at the Los Angeles Opera, Friedrich Edelmann (bassoon), Rebecca Rust (cello), and Vera Breheda (piano) will be performing the works of Hans Gal and Robert Kahn, two composers who were forced to flee Germany in the 1930s, when the work of both composers was banned and destroyed by the Nazi regime. Also featured in this recital will be the world premiere of “Shir Hamaalot” from Israeli composer Max Stern. Edelmann, Rust, and Breheda are accomplished musicians who have played together both in the U.S. and Japan. All proceeds from this performance will benefit the Alfred and Miriam Wolf Scholarship Fund of Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion.
