The Santa Monica City Council has appointed retired City Clerk Denise Anderson-Warren to serve in an interim capacity while the city conducts a national search for a permanent replacement.
Anderson-Warren, who retired in 2023 after nearly eight years in the role, will start Jan. 15 at an hourly rate of $119.13, equivalent to an annual salary of about $247,788, according to a staff report. She replaces Nikima Newsome, who resigned in December.
Mayor Caroline Torosis praised the selection, saying the council was “very pleased” Anderson-Warren agreed to return.
“We are grateful for her willingness to … support the City in this critical role,” Torosis said in a statement.
The council formed an ad-hoc committee to oversee the recruitment process, which is expected to launch in the coming weeks.
As a retired annuitant under state law, Anderson-Warren will receive no additional benefits and serve for a limited duration until a permanent clerk is hired.
The appointment requires final council approval of her contract. Staff recommended the move, citing her experience as allowing an immediate transition without training.
