Santa Monica celebrates Women’s History Month with march events focused on leadership and sustainability

Citywide programming includes Julia Morgan Legacy Day at the Annenberg Beach House.

Santa Monica will mark Women’s History Month with a series of events throughout March highlighting women’s leadership, resilience, and contributions to a more sustainable future.

Observed nationally since 1987, Women’s History Month recognizes the achievements of women across the United States. In Santa Monica, the city’s Women’s History Month Committee has organized community programming aligned with this year’s local theme, “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future.”

Organizers said the 2026 theme broadens the concept of sustainability beyond environmental issues to include economic stability, community resilience, intergenerational equity, and social justice. The programming acknowledges the disproportionate impact global challenges, including climate change, economic insecurity, health care disparities, and limited access to child care, have had on women, particularly those from marginalized communities.

The month’s events began with a Women’s History Month proclamation during the Feb. 24 Santa Monica City Council meeting.

Upcoming programs include Julia Morgan Legacy Day on Sunday, March 1, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Annenberg Community Beach House, 415 Pacific Coast Highway. Presented by the Annenberg Community Beach House and the Santa Monica Conservancy, the event honors Julia Morgan, California’s first licensed female architect, whose work shaped the historic site. The program will feature an “Eclectic by Design” panel discussion led by Morgan scholar Dr. Karen McNeill, followed by a tour of the Julia Morgan-designed Beach House pool.

Families can also participate in a Women’s History Month “Take & Make” kit available March 2 through March 31 at the Main Library, 601 Santa Monica Blvd., and all branch libraries while supplies last. Designed for children ages 4 and older, the kit includes materials to create and personalize a family tree highlighting influential women in participants’ lives.

Additional events are scheduled throughout the month to celebrate and elevate the accomplishments of women of all identities across the Santa Monica community.
