Her notable exhibitions include the museum’s first show on LGBTQ+ history in collaboration with the OUTWORDS Archive, an interactive exhibition on the history of housing, and a display on the city’s treescape for Santa Monica’s sesquicentennial.

The Santa Monica History Museum has appointed Anne Wallentine as its new executive director. Wallentine, who previously served as the museum’s curator from 2023 to 2025, was announced in the role on March 24. During her time as curator, she developed innovative exhibitions and community-focused programs that highlight Santa Monica’s cultural and civic history.

Her notable exhibitions include the museum’s first show on LGBTQ+ history in collaboration with the OUTWORDS Archive, an interactive exhibition on the history of housing, and a display on the city’s treescape for Santa Monica’s sesquicentennial. Her work often connects historical themes to contemporary issues, using oral histories and interactive elements — such as a “game of housing” — to engage visitors in conversations about social inequities.

Before joining the museum, Wallentine held senior roles at communications agencies, where she advised Fortune 500 companies and nonprofits on narrative strategy and public engagement. An accomplished cultural journalist, her writing has appeared in The Financial Times, The Economist, Smithsonian Magazine, The Art Newspaper and Hyperallergic.

“Anne combines deep historical knowledge with a profound commitment to community engagement,” said Susan Potter, museum president and interim chair of the board of directors. “Her knowledge of our institution, paired with her vision for participatory public history, makes her the ideal leader to guide the museum into its next chapter.”

Wallentine said she is honored to lead the institution.

“The museum is a vital community resource, and I look forward to deepening our partnerships and expanding our programs to ensure every resident feels a connection to our shared history,” she said.

In her new role, she plans to expand the museum’s collaborative exhibitions, school partnerships and public programming.
