Bail Set At $52,500 For Santa Monica Man, 75, After Lying To Police:

Latest police, crime and courts news.

A 75-year-old Santa Monica resident was granted bail to the sum of $52,500 on Tuesday, Dec. 30, after providing false information to police officers in an attempt to conceal the fact he had a warrant out for his arrest.

Officers of the Santa Monica Police Department responded to a report of a disturbance in the area of 11th Street and Washington Avenue at 10:43 pm.

Upon arrival the officers spotted a man standing near the intersection yelling random obscenities.

The officers approached this man and noticed he was displaying the signs of alcohol intoxication effects (including slurred speech, red and watery eyes, poor coordination and balance, delusions, the need to express whatever came into his head regardless of the quality of the thoughts, and a strong smell of alcohol).

The officers asked this man what his name was and he gave them an incorrect first name, but when they asked him his date of birth he refused.

The officers asked the man for his wallet and discovered that he had in fact given them his brother’s name as he himself was on probation and also had a warrant out for his arrest.

This ploy was designed to avoid more trouble for this individual, however it failed dismally, as it led to the additional charge of providing false information in addition to the other charges of public intoxication, the warrant, and a violation of probation. The man was granted bail.

Editor’s Note: These reports are part of a regular police coverage series entitled “Alert Police Blotter” (APB), which injects some minor editorial into certain police activities in Santa Monica. Not all of The Mirror’s coverage of incidents involving police are portrayed in this manner. More serious crimes and police-related activities are regularly reported without editorial in the pages of the Santa Monica Mirror and its website, smmirror.com.
