Through October at Santa Monica’s Tongva Park, a number of cultural events for families will be held as part of a “Family Saturdays” series. To kick off these events, award-winning musician and composer Martin Espino held an interactive workshop and demonstration of indigenous American instruments for families visiting Tongva Park throughout the morning this past Saturday to a rapt audience of children and their families.

Nat Trives, who also goes by “Mr. Santa Monica,” has accomplished a lot in his 81 years – as a community advocate, who serves on many nonprofit boards, as a professor at Santa Monica College, and as a former mayor and police officer of Santa Monica. He also recently celebrated his 60th wedding anniversary – an impressive personal accomplishment.

OpEd: Anyone from my generation might express a warm feeling for George Harrison’s song “Here Comes the Sun.” First of all, it’s a tune from the “quiet Beatle” that is in many ways perfect in its simplicity: It’s been a long cold lonely winter and now… here comes the sun. About 10 years ago, there was a small wave of hype for an electric scooter called the Segway. However, hype quickly died down when people realized they looked ridiculous on it, to the point of movies like “Paul Blart, Mall Cop” satirized the vehicle altogether.
