John Adams Middle School’s Advanced Rocketry teacher Larry Hoffing and his students put theory into action last weekend in the Mojave Desert.
The rockets, built by JAMS students, are powered by zinc-sulfur micrograin and feature recycled fins made from old Samohi computer cases. They travel many thousands of feet at mach speeds, and were launched early morning on Saturday, April 26, at the Reaction Research Society Mojave Test Area.
When asked how it feel to see the rockets launch, Hoffing told the Mirror, “Awesome. These kids are so much further ahead in rocket science than I was at their age; I was just starting model rocketry in middle school, and these students are working with sophisticated multi-spindle machined components, engineers, and scientists, and alongside students from Stanford and USC. JAMS kids have experienced Mission Control by partnering with the Reaction Research Society (RRS), the oldest experimental rocketry society in the USA (1940s), to use their launch site near Mojave, California.”
