Treesavers activist Jerry Rubin chained himself to a ficus tree on 4th Street between Broadway and Santa Monica Boulevard on Thursday morning, September 4, as City workers removed sidewalk and street paving and curbs and gutters in preparation for moving several trees. Rubin, who acknowledged that he was impeding the work of the City and said that it was his intention to do so, was arrested. photo by Dan Jansenson 2.The new Southern California for Obama headquarters on Motor Avenue in WLA held a grand opening on Thursday, September 4. 150 people rsvp’d for the event but an estimated 1,000 showed up. Organizers improvised and held the event in the parking lot of the building. Speakers included California State Senator Mark Ridley-Thomas, Los Angeles City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo, Los Angeles City Council President Eric Garcetti, Maria Elena Durazo, Ex. Secretary of the LA Labor Federation, and Mary Jane Stevenson, CA Field Director for the Obama campaign. More than 500 people signed up on the night for volunteer work. photo by Margaret Molloy
