“I thought to myself, Samohi has its own newspaper, why not its own radio station?” These are the words of sophomore Jack Trocinski, who—with the help of his friends—started an internet radio station called Yacek.net. The station plays mostly Hip-Hop and R&B. Trocinski explains: “That’s the kind of music we know. The guys and I have a background in those types of music. We also think that this kind of music will appeal to Samohi, especially after watching everyone get excited about the Kanye concert.” Grammy winning rapper Kanye West performed at Samohi earlier this year. The internet radio show, which is only a few weeks old, broadcasts live on Saturdays from 12-1pm, but can be heard anytime via podcasting. Besides playing music, Trocinski and his friends take calls, have guest DJs on the show, and will start to give away prizes as the show develops. “I have a background in computers,” said Trocinski. “And my friends always know about the freshest songs, so we put together a really good show.” The team is also looking to do a promotion during lunch at Samohi, such as radio stations Power 106 and Latino 96.3 have done. They want to give away CDs and other prizes and collaborate with Running With Speakers, Samohi’s student-run Audio/Visual task force.Says Trocinski, “People think we’re in this for money, but, if anything, we’re losing money. The whole idea is fun. Also, I know music is a big deal for students. When you walk around Samo, everyone is listening to their iPod.”
