Santa Monica Conservancy Receives Grant:

The Santa Monica Conservancy has received a matching grant from the California Council for the Promotion of History (CCPH) to support the organization’s major new project: the creation of “Discovering Our Past,” a publicly accessible historic resource catalogue/database containing photographic and written documentation of historic buildings throughout the city.

The Council’s $750 grant to the Conservancy will help fund the ongoing documentation.

The primary purpose of the California State University History department’s California Council for the Promotion of History (CCPH), is to promote high standards for historical research, presentation, and professional practices.

Historian, author, and Santa Monica Conservancy member Paula Scott has been researching and writing the historical narratives for each of the properties included in the catalog.

“We were pleased to be awarded the grant,” said Conservancy board secretary and program coordinator, Anne Troutman. “This is a new, ambitious program for the Conservancy. Getting financial support from a leading history institution is a huge boost to our efforts.”

The program is part of the Conservancy’s long-term commitment to document and promote the rich architectural and cultural resources that are the basis for and expression of the character of Santa Monica. In the last several months, the Conservancy has held a series of public presentations to solicit suggestions for local properties to be considered for future documentation. Additional suggestions may be made by visiting the Conservancy website at www.smconservancy.org.The Santa Monica Conservancy is a nonprofit organization, dedicated to the preservation of the city’s architectural and cultural heritage.
