SM Beaches Earn “F” Ratings:

Mirror Staff

Heal the Bay’s annual Beach Report Card has been released, and in it there is some bad news for Santa Monica.

Beaches from Santa Monica to Malibu were given “F” ratings.  The worst of the worst were Castle Rock Beach at the Castlerock and Santa Ynez storm drains in Pacific Palisades (#1) and Escondido Creek and Puerco Beach at the Marie Canyon storm drain in Malibu (also #1).  Filling out the local “F” spots were Will Rogers State Beach at Chautauqua (#2), Surfrider Beach in Malibu (#4), Santa Monica Municipal Pier (#5) and Topanga State Beach (#9), all in the top 10 of polluted beaches statewide.

Water quality remains good in the dry season, according to the 2005-06 report.  Many local beaches received A or B ratings, meaning the waters are safe to be in during the summer.

“We’re happy to report that most beaches in the state continue to have safe levels of bacteria during the summer months, especially open ocean beaches,” says Dr. Mark Gold, Executive Director of Heal the Bay.
