Pico Neighborhood activist Cece Bradley, SMC College Trustee Dorothy Earhart Morrison, Rent Control Board Member Betty Mueller, community leader Millie Rosenstein, and nurse Janet Washington are spotlighted in a unique art show that was created by the Young Leaders of the Santa Monica Commission on the Status of Women, and celebrates Women’s History Month.
When Crossroads High School senior Julia Simon was named the Commission’s first Young Leader, she devised a project that would connect high school girls with dynamic senior citizens. Students Simon, Beryl Liebowitz, Celine Marill, Skyler Tulchin and Kiley Wong each spent a year paired with one of the women, interviewing her, and then the five collaborated on an original artwork, which expresses the impact of the seniors’ lives on young women.
The work, “We’re All Ears,” includes original oil paintings, photo montages and photos that focus on each of the senior women.
“We’re All Ears,” opened Tuesday at the Bergamot Station Restaurant and will remain there through Sunday, March 6.
A reception for the young artists and their subjects will be held Friday, March 4 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the café.
From March 7 through March 20, the exhibit will hang at Santa Monica Place. The Chamber of Commerce offices will feature it from March 21 to 27. From March 28 through April 3, the exhibit will hang at Crossroads High School, and the YWCA will feature it from April 4 through April 10.
On Tuesday, March 8, the students will make a presentation to the City Council.
