Women’s clothing boutique Sumiko is closing after over half a century of operations in Santa Monica.
The business started on Main Street in Santa Monica in 1962 with the founder Sumiko Biller’s own designs. At UCLA, she had a one woman fashion that led to coverage from the Los Angeles Times, including full page photos. In 1965, she moved to West Hollywood and opened a shop in Honolulu, but came back to Main Street 36 years ago.
A closing sale is underway. The store offers items such as contemporary clothing (dresses, skirts, tops, pants and coats) as well as clothing that predates World War 2 (kimonos and obis).
“My Customers are all lovely people. I don’t have an exact closing date,” the owner said in an email to Santa Monica Mirror. “[I’m] negotiating with the landlord to stay open through the first week of June.”
The store is located at 3007 Main St. It is open Tuesday through Sunday with hours from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
